Gestation Hypertension

Posted October 9th, 2009 by Leigh

Sounds like quite a mouth full, but it simply means High Blood Pressure during pregnancy.

I am 29 weeks pregnant. Our little Logan is due on the 20th of December.

On Monday morning I met my friend Ali at the Clearwater Mall. We had a cuppa at one of the coffee shops and then decided to take a stroll around the mall and window shop.

I think we visited three shops and I was breathless, my hands were full of perspiration and swollen and my vision was blurred. It was quite a scary experience. We went to the closest coffee shop and ordered fruit juice as I thought my sugar levels were probably just low.

After 10 minutes, my feet started with pins and needles. Oh! My life I felt awful. Ali quickly walked me over to Clicks to check my BP, it was sky high. Immediately we called my gynae and I was told me meet him at his rooms.

I spent about an hour in his rooms while they monitored my BP and checked my protein levels etc. Sadly after an hour I was admitted to hospital as my BP was just too high and they had to monitor it for 24 hours.

At first I thought yippee a good night’s sleep awaits me. No such luck, I was woken up every 2 hours for my check up, it was awful. Fortunately my BP stabilised and I went home in the morning.

I did not quite understand the risks of Gestation Hypertension, so as soon as I arrived home I logged onto www.babycentre.co.uk for more info.

I now understand that it is very dangerous for the mother and the baby. I will be monitored for the remainder of my pregnancy.

Apparently there is no “real” explanation why some mommies experience gestation hypertension, but in my case my Doctor feels my body is taking strain as my pregnancies have been so close to one another. Abigail is 8 months old and little Logan is 29 weeks (in mommy’s womb). Both babies will be born in 2009.

At the moment I am limited to seeing one client a day, but the Doctor will review this next week. At first I was not happy to cut back on my working hours, as I work for myself, but I have realized that baby and mommy come first.

For the remainder of my pregnancy I will have to take it easy, relax and keep my feet up!

Little Logan is safe and happy at the moment and I pray that I carry full term.

Oh hugs now that you actually know the realities of it you must be feeling rather stressed. In this situation Mommy and baby absolutely come first. Take it VERY easy I cannot think total bed rest which is in some cases prescribed is much fun past the idea of rest.
Hope things stabilise for you. In my thoughts.
