Kids and homework

I am trying to think back to when I was in grade 2 (quite a long time ago). I am sure that we did not receive as much homework as our little ones do today.
I remember we had reading “Cathy and Mark” and maybe spelling.

Joshua is in grade 2 and every day he receives: reading, spelling, literacy / comprehension and maths. It takes us about 1 ½ hours to complete all of his homework. Some days we end up having a screaming match because he is too tired to finish his homework or I’m just running out of patience.

On the odd occasion he will receive a project which he has to complete and talk about in front of his class. I am certain we only received projects in standard 2 (grade 4).

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays he plays cricket so we only get home from school around 4 pm. He is still expected to complete the same amount of homework. He is suppose to take part in two extra mural activities per week after school , however, I have put a stop to this as I cannot see myself doing homework at 5pm every day and somehow still find the time to make dinner and then be a happy camper when my hubby arrives home. He is limited to one extra mural after school.

I think it is ridiculous that our little ones have to spend so much time behind books afterschool and at such a young age. Surely they get enough work done during school hours, after all what are we paying school fees for.

Don’t get me wrong, I believe a little homework is necessary as I am sure it prepares them for future tests and exams.

I cannot wait for the school holidays “no more homework for six weeks”.
