A life means nothing to some

Posted April 3rd, 2010 by Leigh

After a lovely day at the dam with Leon and Ali. Barend, the kids and I headed for home. We drove thru Villiers as we wanted to see the dam wall. It was quite something to see as the gates were open. We turned onto the R59 and were on our way to Roodepoort.

While we were driving Barend and I discussed the feature on Carte Blanche relating to the bridge (rock throwing) on the N3. We were both saying how sick some people are and how a life means nothing to some.

We were about 5 minutes from the Meyerton turn off when we both noticed a huge truck stop in the road and the two cars behind it swerve. My first thought was that there had been a major accident as there were brake lights everywhere.

The road was rather dark as it was around 8pm. I suddenly looked up towards the bridge ahead and saw 4 dark figures standing on top. In a matter of seconds they were throwing stones (I think) at our car. Barend swerved but they managed to hit the car. We never stopped but drove on. My heart was racing, I kept thanking God that we were safe and that our children were sound asleep.

I watched every single bridged as we approached them, thinking you bastards if I had a gun I’d use it. I don’t even know how to use one.

I immediately said to Barend, well just another reason for us to leave this dam country. I absolutely love South Africa NOT !!!!!!!!

To live in fear is awful. We will no longer travel at night and it is such a pity because some of our friends live in PTA and we love to kuier with them until late, but that will now come to an end. I am MORE DETERMINED to save harder every month so we can afford our trip to OZ and NZ, and get the hell out of here!!!

I understand that fear and the need to leave. SA can just be harder to get out of your blood than you think. So sorry this happened to you, just glad you are all okay

I am so sorry to hear that. Being away from South Africa for so long it is easy to forget. I hope that you can save fast cause you cannot put a price to your family’s lives. Steven and I are so greatful for the life we have hear in Australia and know that you, Barend and your beautiful kids will love it. We love and care about you lots, so take care and god bless.

This has never happened to me but I always check bridges because of the stories I have heard – even in the day!

It is sad Leigh :( I dont drive on my own at night since my smash and grab – which was hard when I was single!

Sorry you had to experience this – it is scary :(

I’m so glad to hear you are all ok! May you all be protected in the time you have left there – may it be a short time until you leave for greener shores…
Hugs and blessings to you all!

Thanks everyone, I too am glad that we are all safe. Fortunately there was very, very little damage to our car. To my OZ and NZ friends I too hope we see you soon. I realize it will be a very difficult move when we eventually do but I’ve lived abroad in the USA and UK and the only thing that brought me back was my family, I now have my own children’s future to think about and Barend and I just want to ensure they have a happy and safe up bringing. I also realize that a lot of SA’s return as they don’t or can’t make a new life abroad but we are very, very determined and have thought it thru………It will probably take us a good 2 – 3 years to get everything in order :(

Sweatheart I am so sorry this happened to you, I am always worrying about you, Barend and the children and Desi and Saul as well, what with the Hi jacking in their area. I am really glad that you have decided not to travel at night BUT even more so, I am pleased that this has brought you closer to making your BIG move. I wish Des did not have to travel at night but I know you cannot put your life on hold because of the crime in SA. When Saul was ill in hospital I was constantly stressing about Desi driving to the hospital to see him and back now I have to just pray that you all stay safe.
I love you all so much.
